Hougang Estate

Hougang is the housing estate located in the north east of Singapore, sitting in between Punggol, Upper Serangoon Road and Yio Chu Kang. It was originally named “Hou Kang” in 1979 when Housing and Development Board (HDB) started building 460-hectare of public housing to serve 120000 of residents. By 2015, Hougang New Town is the home to more than 51000 public housing units with about 180000 residents, the largest in Singapore in terms of land size.

On top of that, Hougang is also the first estate to go under a revised township design concept where a colonial style town centre were developed to cater for shophouses and public housing spread around it. At the same time, the estate was also given its own character with more curvy design building, such as curved balconies, rounder columns as well as other features.

In 1983, Hougang Bus Interchange commenced its operation to serve the residents in the area. Subsequently Hougang MRT station was built and opened in 2003 as part of the North East Line MRT, integrating with a new bus interchange.
